Public Conveniences in Blenheim Gardens

23/8/2019

Picture

Following serious vandalism of one of the multi-use toilets at the southern end of Blenheim Gardens (nearest the town centre) that toilet has been closed until repairs can be effected.  The remaining multi-use toilet is open for use and, over the Bank Holiday, the old Gents' toilets at the opposite end of the Gardens will be opened again.  The other nearest toilets are in Summerland Place, next to the Co-op.
If anyone has any information about the vandalism which took place on the night of 20/21 August the police will be pleased to receive it.

                                   PRESS RELEASE

Town Council continues to express concern over the future of Blenheim Gardens Café

Since the closure of the café in Blenheim Gardens in November 2018 Minehead Town Council has been expressing its concerns about the future of this much loved ‘jewel in the crown’ of Minehead to the Gardens’ owners, Somerset West and Taunton Council.

Minehead Town Council has made a number of suggestions, but it has been made clear that Somerset West & Taunton Council is not prepared to relinquish ownership of the Gardens.   During meetings with representatives, it has been made clear by the newly formed District Council that the Café (a temporary structure based around the original Bandstand in the Gardens) is no longer fit for purpose.  Covenants on the land prohibit the erection of a permanent building but Minehead Town Council have proposed having a ‘wooden chalet-style structure’ which the District Council has agreed to consider.  Such a structure could include both inside and outside space for eating as well as public toilets, and would not be classed as a permanent structure for Planning purposes

Cllr. Sandra Slade, Mayor of Minehead, said:
“We have discussed a number of alternative proposals, including the provision of a wooden construction Café or, even, Town Council maybe managing the Gardens on behalf of District Council.  Although no decisions have yet been made, we are encouraged by the response some of our suggestions have received.  We know how much the Café closure affected residents and the town and we want to assure them that we are doing our utmost to achieve some workable solution that will please the residents.  However, these things do move slowly, and we ask for patience as we endeavour to move matters forward.”

Save Porlock Fire Station

Following its participation in the March to Save Porlock Fire Station on Thursday 25 July, Minehead Town Council encourages everyone to attend the Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service Consultation in Minehead on the afternoon of 22 August at Minehead Library.   This isn't a matter for Porlock alone - fire cover in Minehead will be affected by the closure of Porlock's Station and we, as a town, must stand with our neighbours in fighting these cuts to a most valued and much needed service.  We encourage everyone to attend on 22 August to make their views known.
