Survey and Consultation about Unitary Council for Somerset

2/7/2020

In response to a letter from Somerset County Council advising Minehead Town Council that a business case for a Unitary Authority would be presented at SCC's July meeting and of the continuing public consultation on their proposals the Acting Clerk, following Council's directions, replied as follows:

Dear Mr Fothergill
Survey for Unitary Council
I am writing to inform you that Minehead Town Council has the following comments to make:
Minehead Town Council objects in the strongest possible terms to the decision of Somerset County Council to consider holding a Public Consultation and a survey regarding reorganisation of Local Government in the County of Somerset at this time.  Any action on this subject must be deferred until the end of the health and economic effects of the COVID-19 crisis.
Many residents are struggling physically, mentally and financially and will likely continue to do so for quite some time to come.
Businesses are facing an unprecedented economic challenge; thousands of people are not sure about their employment, income or future.
In this time of national crisis, re-routing time, effort, and money into a premature project is foolhardy, and shows a distinct lack of empathy, awareness, and connectedness to the residents of this region.
