The tree planted by Cllr. Bridle is a John Downie crab apple which is a pollinator of other apple trees and produces excellent fruit for making jelly which the group hope to use when the tree is mature. West Somerset Parks Staff were thanked for their assistance with the preparation of the tree planting event.
The planting of an apple tree marks the registration of Minehead and Alcombe as a Transition Town. Despite heavy rain last saturday supporters of Transition Minehead and Alcombe attended the planting of a crab apple tree in Blenheim Gardens. The planting was completed by the Mayor Cllr. Ron Bridle. Maureen Smith secretary of the group said "It is especially appropriate that Ron is here as when we started out nearly two years ago he put us in touch with the regional Cooperative Community Fund who help Transition groups with start up funds". Also the Town Council gave a grant which enabled the group to buy display boards a banner and print leaflets. Money has been carefully spent locally whenever possible.
