On Thursday 15 August the Mayor and Deputy Mayor attended the Burma Star Association's Commemoration of VJ Day + 74 in Blenheim Gardens.  Over forty people gathered to remember those who died in the Two Great Wars in other countries, particularly remembering those who served, suffered and died in conflicts in the Far East.  The service was led by Rev John Thorogood and, as the standards of the Burma Star Association, Royal British Legion and Air Cadet Squadron were lowered, and the notes of the bugle playing the Last Post filled the Gardens, wreaths were laid at the Memorial there.

On Saturday 10 August the Mayor attended the Minehead Annual Flower Show at The West Somerset College.  The Show is organised by the Minehead and District Gardeners’ Association who, despite bad weather, set up and ran a well organised and well attended Show.  The Mayor was delighted to tour the exhibits with the President of the Gardeners’ Association before presenting thirty trophies to the winners of the various sections.  The Mayor told those present how much she had enjoyed viewing the entries and that she was particularly pleased that in many cases she had, without seeing the Judge’s verdict, ‘picked the winner’.  It was also good to see so many local businesses sponsoring the Show’s numerous categories of flowers, vegetables and crafts.  She congratulated everyone on their efforts and thanked the large number of people who had come to view the Show for their support of this local event.

Minehead Grand Prix

On Sunday 23rd June the Mayor attended the Minehead Grand Prix cycling event in the centre of town.  It was good to see so many entrants from all around the country as well as our own home-grown talent taking part, including Round 4 of the National Youth Series Championships.

The Mayor had the privilege of presenting prizes to the winners of two youth races (under 10's and under 16's) which had been sponsored by the Town Council and she also had the pleasure of ringing the last lap bell and waving the chequered flag for one race - it’s not often the Mayor is invited to make a noise and annoy people!

The Mayor and Council would like to thank Minehead Cycling Club and the BID for their brilliant organisation of this event which was much enjoyed by all who attended and the many local sponsors of races for their support for the town.
