The Mayor Cllr Leslie Smith was invited to present certificates to a group of unemployed fifty year old's by Active Plus. The Mayor had not heard about this organisation before and was pleased that the organisation had enclosed a background sheet to explain their work and objectives. Briefly the organisation is using the skills of injured and sick ex-military personnel to provide a range of services for people in need. Client groups for this development programme include the unemployed, disaffected young people and people with health and well being needs. The group the Mayor met were unemployed over 50's who were completing the end of their six week course. The Mayor was interested to see just a small part of the course and the apparent effect on their confidence and camaraderie which he thought was a very worthwhile programme.
![]() Minehead Flower Show is held at the West Somerset Community College every year. The Mayor was invited to present a Certificate and Cup to each category winner, which amounted to presenting thirty cups and certificates. The event was very well supported with over 600 entries for all of the categories. The 'Town Cup' was awarded to the competitor with the most points overall. The Mayor thoroughly enjoyed making his way around the displays and was impressed by the quality achieved by many of the entries. In the photograph on the left you can see some of the prize winners with the Mayor Cllr Leslie Smith (Third from the right). ![]() The procession assembled at the Old Municipal Building, it was also the first time the Mayor had visited this wonderful old building. This was the starting point for the procession to walk to St Mary Magdalene Church which was a short distance away. The service commenced at 2.30 pm and lasted an hour and on its conclusion the guests proceeded to the Museum for light refreshments. |
