Cllr Leslie Smith the Mayor of Minehead was invited to start the Harbour Festival with the inauguration of the plaques on Minehead Harbour wall which was followed by a talk by the esteemed maritime author John Gilman. A small crowd observed the ceremony which lasted about forty minutes and later on the tall ship the "Irene" arrived at the Harbour and will be back again over the next few days. Singers from the Acorn Group and from Minehead First and Middle School's were there to sing shanties. In the evening the Exmouth Shanty Men performed at The Old Ship Aground starting at 8.00pm.
On the 16th May 2016 at the Statutory Annual Meeting of the Full Council Councillor Jean Parbrook was re-elected as the Mayor of Minehead, Councillor Andrew Kingston-James was elected as Deputy Mayor of Minehead.
